Things to consider when purchasing a used Honda.
Buying a used Honda is usually a good idea, due to the legendary reliability of this particular Japanese auto maker. There are seldom any repairs required on the vehicle. However there are few important factors to consider when buying a used Honda.
1. Honda six cylinder engine configuration - this will apply to the older Honda Accord sedan or coupe in V6 engine, or older Odyssey minivans. This particular engine configuration is 3.0 V6, the V6 engine block itself is nearly bullet proof with excellent reliability. However if you are purchasing a 1999 - 2002 used Odyssey in automatic transmission, there is often transmission gear slippage issues. This is also true for 1999-2002 Honda Accord V6 in automatic transmission. When test driving the vehicle one should pay particular close attention to the gear shifting, test if it is smooth, or if there is a high pitch wining noise at higher rpm.
2. Timing belt and water pump replacement - this will apply to 1997 and older Honda vehicles, the timing belt and water pump replacement interval is set at 96,000 km. However 1998 and newer vehicles will have a higher replacement interval at 160,000 km. The usual cost associated with a 4 cylinder timing belt and water pump replacement should be around $400, and usually there is no way of telling if the procedure has been done. So the next best thing is to ask the seller directly.
